Scientific Exchange at the Highest Level

The Spring Meeting of the German Physical Society (DPG) offers a central platform for physicists from both academia and industry. Organised by the DPG section SAMOP (Atomic, Molecular, Quantum Optics and Photonics), the conference is supported by specialist divisions in atomic physics, molecular physics, quantum optics and photonics, mass spectrometry, and short-time and laser physics. Contributions from the Working Groups on Equal Opportunities (AKC) and “Young DPG” complement the programme.

With around 10,000 participants annually, the DPG meetings rank among the largest physics congresses in Europe. The SAMOP meeting in Mainz is one of the most distinguished and specialised events in the series.

Content and Programme

The conference features a wide-ranging scientific programme:

  • Plenary talks by renowned researchers provide insights into current developments in AMO physics, quantum optics, and related fields.

  • Symposia address topics such as structured light fields, quantum many-body systems, precision metrology, X-ray sources, and photonic interactions.

  • Tutorials on 1 March 2026 offer free introductory workshops on current research topics, especially designed for early-career scientists.

  • Talks and posters by students and doctoral researchers foster active scientific exchange across disciplines.

  • Career-related formats such as an industry exhibition and English-language lunch talks provide insights into professional pathways and networking opportunities with employers.

International Participation

Austria will be the official guest country in 2026, represented by the Austrian Physical Society (ÖPG). A dedicated symposium will showcase highlights from Austrian AMO research, and Austrian speakers will also contribute to various scientific sessions. The guest country programme highlights the international character of the conference.

Target Audience and Relevance

The event is open to physicists at all career stages—from students and postdocs to senior researchers—as well as representatives from industry and public institutions. Early-career researchers in particular benefit from the opportunity to present their work, establish new connections, and engage in international scientific exchange.

The DPG Spring Meeting SAMOP is regarded as a key forum for the German-speaking and broader European community in atomic, molecular, and quantum physics.
