#IonHack2025: Quantum Hackathon – Gate Set Tomography

Hackathon on Gate Set Tomography
November 19 to 21, 2025

Ion Hack 2025: eleQtron and JUNIQ Quantum Hackathon – Gate Set Tomography

From 19–21 November 2025, the #IonHack2025 will bring together leading researchers, industry experts and advanced students at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre. Organized jointly by the Jülich UNified Infrastructure for Quantum Computing (JUNIQ) and the NRW-funded EPIQ collaboration with eleQtron, the hackathon invites selected PhD candidates, postdocs and developers to explore one of the most critical challenges in today’s Quantum Calibration, Validation and Verification (QCVV).

This year’s focus is on Gate Set Tomography (GST) and its latest development, Compressive Gate Set Tomography (mGST)—powerful and self-consistent methods for characterizing quantum gates. These techniques are essential for improving the accuracy, robustness and scalability of quantum processors.

Over the course of three dynamic days, participants will engage in a mix of expert lectures, hands-on sessions and collaborative team challenges. Working with real-world data, they will deepen their understanding of trapped-ion systems, explore cutting-edge QCVV techniques and develop innovative strategies to push system performance forward. The hackathon also offers a unique networking environment connecting academia and industry.

Topics include:

  • Quantum computing with trapped ions

  • Introduction to error modelling
  • Gate Set Tomography (GST)
  • Compressive Gate Set Tomography (mGST)

Participation & Registration

The hackathon is designed for senior PhD students and postdocs in physics, computer science and related quantum fields.
Application is required for on-site participation. Further details can be found on the registration page. Further details Further details can be found on the registration page of #IonHack2025.
